What do essential oils have to do with emotions?
The aroma of essential oils is sent directly to the brain’s center via the olfactory bulb. It travels quickly to the limbic system, where it is processed. The limbic system then releases neurochemicals that can have various effects such as calming, relaxing, soothing, etc.
Anxiety and Its Effects on the Body
Many people don’t realize that chronic and acute anxiety creates an acidic condition in the body. Essential oils support the body in minimizing this reaction. Certain essential oils work by calming the central nervous system and help us relax instead of allowing the build-up of anxiety in the body.
Emotional Trauma and Physical Effects
Essential oils can also help in the release of old emotional traumas. In 1989, Dr. Joseph Ledoux from NY Medical University discovered that the amygdala (in the limbic center of the brain) plays a role in storing and releasing emotional traumas. He also suggested that aromas could trigger an emotional release.
Other studies support the connection of positive emotional change with essential oil therapies The American Journal of Hospice and Palliative care reported a reduction in depression when utilizing essential oils. Certain oils improved vital signs and a sense of well-being. Technology and health care demonstrated that essential oils can significantly change brain response. These responses have been recorded with the electrocardiographic monitoring of brain frequencies and through PET scans of brain activity.
In addition to having direct effects on our emotions, I believe essential oils also affect the human energy field, helping to balance and raise our frequencies.
