What is Foot Reflexology?
Reflexology, a practice discovered and used by many ancient cultures, is used with great success in our world today.
Throughout the ages, healers in various cultures discovered that the state of the extremities reflected disorders within the body, especially in the case of the hands and feet. Through further observation and experimentation, healers in distant and separate areas of the world found that stimulating tender spots in the extremities resulted in relief from disease and improvement in health. Today, we call this practice “reflexology.”
Nerve endings on the foot can reveal deeper issues within the body.
When I use reflexology in my practice, I feel for small calcium deposits that might be attached to the nerve endings. When I find a deposit on a known reflex point, it reveals an imbalance in the corresponding area of the body. The imbalance can be physical or emotional. In either case, reflexology lets me identify an imbalance, blockage, or stagnant energy that needs to be corrected.
Reflexology brings relief and recovery to affected areas of the body.
My goal is to find these affected areas and help your body release the calcium deposits. As I do this, your body sends oxygen and increased blood flow up through the nerve endings. This encourages your body to release endorphins for natural recovery and effective pain relief.
What to Expect:
How does it feel to experience a foot reflexology session?
You’ll find a session soothing and non-invasive. You’ll remain clothed at all times. I’ll welcome you into my treatment room, where you’ll relax on the massage table. You’ll remove your shoes and socks and experience something like a foot massage but more targeted and precise.
Relax and Enjoy!
Those who have benefited from foot reflexology report a general feeling of relaxation after a session. Some clients experience “lightness” or tingling in the body, while others report a sense of “opening.” Some clients feel energy moving from the pressure points to the corresponding body areas or organs.
I often suggest adding a Light and Sound Vibration Therapy session to your reflexology appointment in order to enhance the energetic benefits.
What’s happening in a session?
A session includes an overall assessment as well as the targeting of specific issues.
Even if you express specific health concerns, we’ll start by taking an overall assessment of the foot. I’ll work through the entire pattern of the reflexology therapy, starting at the toes and working down the foot. My sessions include all of the points on both feet, and, in some cases, the hands and ears. By working systematically through all the pressure points, I’ll come to understand what forces are at play in your internal organs, glands, muscle groups, bones, nerve ganglions (solar plexus, brachial plexus), and nerves. If you have a specific concern, such as head pain, I’ll do additional work on the area corresponding to the presenting problem.
Possible benefits from foot reflexology:
Foot reflexology is a complementary health support technique that promotes natural healing and is not considered a substitute for medical care. However, many who receive reflexology sessions report the following positive results:
- Increased energy
- Enhanced sleep
- Relief from discomfort
- More mobile joints
- Frequent bowel movements due to reflexology’s cleansing and toxin-eliminating effects
- An emotional or psychological release like crying
